In the past couple years I’ve gotten really into ambient music, but mostly I use it at night when I’m falling asleep, or to soothe myself if i’m really high, or as something to meditate with. So my bias has tended towards peaceful stuff with minimal to no percussion or lyrics. Harold Budd was my most listened to artist on Spotify last year cus I put his albums on a loop when I’m sleeping almost every night lately. I’ve played Translucence/Drift Music probably like 200 times, one of the best albums to sleep to ever IMO. Some of Eno’s albums are good for this too though most are too engaging, but just going through his collaborators had been a good way to find this sort of stuff. Larajji has more good stuff for instance.
Oddly enough that recent flute album that Andre 3000 put out hit the spot for me as well.
Hard to find stuff in this genre though since its not like theres a big community of hardcore fans recommending this sorts of music. Mostly I just skim through the random albums in the genre that Spotify recommends or go through genre lists on RYM. I have found some great stuff that way though. Stars of The Lid are an act I kind of can’t believe I never saw mentioned on babble back in the day since their peak years were in the mid 00s, they’re like if you took Sigur Ros and removed everything except for the lush atmospheric strings and emotional swells, and one of the members only very recently DEADed himself (RIP Brian McBride).
The Eno collabs are classic of course but Eno also produced a lot of his other albums too, but theres also a ton of great stuff in his Robin Guthrie collabs (they’re like instrumental cocteau twins records) and his actual solo albums have some of the most beautiful spare stripped down reverby piano you’ll ever hear.
Some Budd albums have spoken word poetry on them. I skip those ones.
At work I have to be subject to the dogshit playlists my co-workers put on (who wants to hear maroon 5 every day?). I could force my music on them if i really wanted since they would probably give me the AUX if I asked, but I don’t need that kind of pressure.
Oh and I do love Plantasia.
