I thought MC Hammer’s bankruptcy was caused by spending millions of dollars making waterfalls go through his house, because he thought water was “powerful.”

The reasons MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice’s careers went down the shitter are different. You had Vanilla Ice’s right (he was being made fun of right away, like Jim Carrey doing him on In Living Color–“so very white white baby”) but MC Hammer’s was a combination of blowing money and people getting really, really sick of “U Can’t Touch This” really fast (there were also people who didn’t like that he appropriated “Super Freak,” and for kids today “U Can’t Touch This” is far better known than the Rick James hit…but then again Vanilla Ice appropriated “Under Pressure,” then super-lamely tried to deny it). There were LOTS of cultural moments where people were claiming that the song was driving people nuts–Sam Kinison said “I’m MC Hammered out” in one of his terrible stand-up specials, David Spade went “doo, doo-doo-doo-, doo-doo, doo-doo IT’S OVER” on SNL, etc. Then both he and Vanilla Ice tried to go “gangsta” and got laughed off the face of the planet.
