I never remember them being popular, but I assumed you could still find them easily.

However, I just Googled it and apparently they’re not that common anymore. In the early ’90s they raised the excise tax on wine and that apparently made wine coolers too much more expensive to make than it did. “malt-based alcopops like Smirnoff Ice” are they type of thing that replaced them. That makes sense, since it’s an example of something I actually remember people drinking. White Claw is big now.
