Not sure exactly but probably something in the range of the big early hits by pop acts like Britney Spears, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys. At least in terms of being aware of it being a hit at the time. I know I heard songs like the macarena and Mambo #5 but I’m not sure I was aware of those being actual hits as opposed to just assuming they were childrens songs since we had them on some kidsbop-like CD.
I’ve been a fan of Barenaked Ladies since I was a little kid and so I experienced every album of theirs as it was released, I remember “The Old Apartment” being a hit in Canada. though I’m not sure I was aware of “One Week” being as huge a hit as it was for quite a while since it was just “the first song on the new bnl album” to me long before I heard it in any other context.
