In response to the Last Dinner Party discussion below, but really not about those babes so it’s up here.
I did a couple of relistens after my post.
We Are The Pipettes - Has aged fairly well and in retrospect an obvious influence on the current 4th or whatever wave of feminism we’re on of pop riding the charts like the dreaded Taylor S. But man were these girl-groupers inconsistent. Quite a few of the lyrics are cringey and some of the tunes annoying. And “Dirty Mind” only succeeds in making me relisten to Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From” - man, what a great song.
Wet Leg - This is a neat little album, but how on earth these Isle of Wightswomen came to be hailed as the next great coming of the Breeders is downright embarrassing. Listening to this music is like eating cotton candy. It’s insubstantial fluff that tastes great and goes down easy, but it’s literally made out of nothing but hot air and sugar, and has no nutritional value. Dozens of bands release cute little pop albums like this every year. What makes these Mean Girls so special?
