Ah – with the science fantasy stuff, I was talking more strictly about computer/video games. I don’t doubt that stuff exists, but I don’t care for movies and I don’t think I’ve read a sci-fi novel in my life (ed: yeah, looking at the list I’ve read 1984 and Frankenstein) so I know pretty much nothing about it and you can ignore anything I have to say about it.

But even just video games, the first Final Fantasy involved time travel, ancient civilizations with advanced technology, the like; there’s a strain of this stuff throughout the FF series so that it wasn’t a stretch when the first part of FF7 was set in a dystopian (literally) industrial city. Nothing like that is in, say, the Dragon Quest/Warrior games.
