It might be the most “Tom Cruise” Tom Cruise movie of all time. And owes a heavy debt to Star Wars.

I only saw the original last week (I did see the new one when it came out). That one has stronger imagery and 80’s Tony Scott vibes, but this one is generally considered a better film.

One thing that stuck out about the original is they didn’t disguise Cruise’s height at all. Several scenes where he’s in a mid-range dialogue shot talking with three or four other people, and is clearly half a foot shorter than them!

The new one pure cheese but it probably does a better job of nailing the old 80’s/90’s blockbuster formula than most attempts in recent years.

It’s difficult to dislike even though it’s a scientologist starring in US military propaganda.
