Pop quiz, Joe: what’s the most annoying dungeon in the game, and why is it the Spiral Pit? I got to the part past the maze but I must have missed a switch somewhere on the walls, unless there’s only one wheel and I turned the same one twice. I’ll look into that.

Entered Mertis and a city on a hill starting in B. Didn’t learn much or get many quests, but I spent an hour or so immersed in the Avernum world and am comfortable going on and playing it now.
