Read a bunch of his stuff during the ’90s after my 11th grade english teacher recommended the short story collection Lost In The Funhouse. That probably remains my favorite; the narrative experimental stuff can be heavy handed but felt very bold to me at the time. His ’60s novels didn’t do much for me, they seemed kind of locked to that social moment. I more enjoyed the kind of dayglow mythifying in Chimera (the key to the treasure is the treasure!) and got pulled into the storytelling games in The Last Voyage Of Somebody the Sailor. Attended a reading where he read from Coming Soon!!! which I meant pick up but never got around to–the humor and rhythm and vigor in his writing came across stronger in person than on the page. Makes me curious if any of his audiobooks are narrated by him.
