I read A Princess Of Mars as an adult (and because I was about to watch Disney’s John Carter, which ended up getting laughed off the face of the planet by critics) after Joe said it was horrible, and didn’t get into it much. It’s hard for me to like pulp written for 12 year old boys now, let alone pulp written for 12 year old boys in the time of the Titanic. I probably didn’t hate it as much as Joe did, though.
The things I remember best about Burroughs’ Tarzan book, the first one, are the racist things, like Tarzan realizing he can’t eat a black man’s flesh, or the white party having a black maid with them who behaves terribly.
