Boston is the first band that comes to mind when anyone talks about home studios. Tom Scholz had an engineering degree from MIT and built a basement studio where he spent a while making the first Boston album; thus, modern stadium rock was made in a basement. The album that got released was essentially not all that different from Scholz’s demo tapes.
Kate Bush got a pretty big home studio to start doing Hounds Of Love, IIRC. She spent something like 22 months making the followup, The Sensual World.
Pretty sure Kevin Shields used an advance from Island Records to built a big fat home studio but he’s a perfectionist psycho.
