"downhill from its admittedly nice, universal premise"

I’d say it goes from one universal premise to another, from Farrell’s “I’m not good enough for my friend” to Gleeson’s “I’ve wasted my time on this earth”.
I really liked it, but it does get too heavy-handed - especially with the civil war metaphor.
