I left out live albums but Lazer Guided Melodies is my second-favorite album, after Bat Out of Hell; the only kink in this plan is that I’ve just plain never thought much of Pure Phase. It’s their A Northern Soul album (hey! a three-album band, a strong three-album band – the Verve). And then, like Neptune sucking on Uranus in orbit with its gravity, leading to it to be inferred to exist by astronomers even though it was too distant to be seen, there’s the presence of Royal Albert Hall. That’s basically a bastardization of Ladies and Gentlemen, and it’s much more powerful than the actual album and many of the renditions outdo the studio version. It’s like how The Complete Live at Raji’s makes much of the Dream Syndicate’s original run superfluous.
