it’s weird to lead off with “Not even released in the U.S.” when the original wasn’t either, although it got a real European release.
Also, after 1964 his only other work as a Hollywood director was The Big Red One, which might be his greatest film, but it was butchered by the studio and the partial restoration happened decades later after he was dead. Shark! is listed as a Mexican/U.S. production, but it sounds like it was mostly Mexican and it was apparently enough of a disaster that he tried to have his name taken off of it. I’ve never seen it. I think the only one of his Hollywood movies I’ve never see is The Crimson Kimono, although I don’t really remember Underworld U.S.A.
He did write a few movies in the late 60s/70s. But, aside from The Big Red One, the post-studio system Hollywood had no interest in him.
With White Dog it wasn’t even really _back_lash, since people never saw the movie.
