When I started the film I felt the tinge of “oh another New Hollywood downbeat neo noir”, but by the end it’s clearly an exceptional drama for any period. Plus Gene Hackman at the height of his abilities. Totally deserves to be in the Criterion Collection, especially compared to half of what’s included now.
