so i am probably more accepting of this documentary despite my feeling that it only briefly covered controversial aspect of the group.
very limited coverage on Brian Wilson mental issues, no mention of Eugene Landy, little emphasis on intraband conflicts. few minutes on Charles Manson. no real mention on self destructive behaviour of Dennis although i thought it was insightful that Mike Love believed he carried the guilt for the rest of his life regarding Charles Manson murder despite it not being his fault which may be an explanation on his deterioriation. no real rememberance of death of Dennis and Carl. covered 60’s in depth and then rushed the 70’s album in the last 30 minutes
i thought it was funny that Mike Love repeatedly went on how unfair he didn’t get songwriting/lyrics credit theoughout the documentary. although i think artistically it was Brian musicianship in crafting melodies, interesting chord progression and vocal harmonies is what makes them great and tomeless. it’s hard to argue that commercially the innocent lyrics covering surf, cars and fun was what make them popular and hence sold all the records and hence Mike Love deserves some compensation
- The new BB doc very much feels like the Beach Boys seen through the lens of Mike Love - Paul C July 10 4:21 AM
