I think in the ’80s there was a stretch where his live shows were widely disliked and accused of being done with no regard for what the audience would enjoy, although I’m not familiar with what they actually sounded like. But Ebert’s not talking about his live performances, and the late 90s/early 2000s shows were as crowd pleasing as the albums, as long as you’re okay with a performer who doesn’t talk to the audience between songs at all. I guess the songs sounded different than the studio versions, and some people might not like that, but they sounded like the type of music that you’d expect people who liked the classic albums to enjoy.
