I saw Yo La Tengo last night in Austin!
The first set was pretty quiet. They played a few acoustic songs and it seriously felt like a coffee shop performance. It was the quietest concert I’ve ever been to for that part of the set. Then for set 2, they took a break and broke out the noise pedals. Autumn Sweater and Sugarcube were highlights for me. Finally, for the “encore” (they didn’t leave the stage for this), they played some covers. They started with Count Me In, which I’d never heard, as a “happy birthday” song for Georgia Hubley, the band’s percussionist and vocalist whose birthday was yesterday and who kind of sat there smiling and didn’t know what to do while they played. Then they did a rendition of Who Loves The Sun by The Velvet Underground and finished with Behind That Locked Door by George Harrison.
Altogether it was a great show! I love a chill concert where the band plays a few hits, jams for a bit, and doesn’t overstay its welcome. Great weather in Austin too last night.
Typically, if I’m not familiar with a band I’m seeing live, I like to look up the setlist a few days before and give it a few listens, but I didn’t do that here. I was only familiar with stuff from I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One, but I still enjoyed the show. I think usually, if I’ve prepared for a show, I enjoy it more.
Do y’all ever go in cold to a concert? How do y’all feel about Yo La Tengo?
