The only thing I know about the content of An Officer and a Gentleman is the Simpson’s parody.

Priest and Robert Bloch (Psycho) were genre writers who were famous with genre audiences and both won numerous awards that get attention in their niche communities (for example: The Hugo Award, the Bram Stoker Award, The World Fantasy Award, John W. Campbell Memorial Award). It’s a ghetto, but it also gave them marketing infrastructure. I dunno if those other guys have followings. It sure doesn’t look like Gustav Hasford did when he was alive, and his small body of work is now out of print. The other two also look like they have smaller bodies of work than Bloch and Priest.

I haven’t seen The Prestige, but it probably had a better chance of bringing its author more mainstream exposure at the time of its release than Psycho did.
