I hate how people project the idea of “soap opera”, a term which was coined to describe 1930s radio serials, back to the Art that those serials were a dumbed down version of. Jane Erye and Wuthering Heights were completely groundbreaking. I just finished Villette and while it’s not as accessible as JE, it’s a remarkable piece of work that verges on stream of consciousness at times.
