Oh so it was specially SOM’s experience that led to Square going with Sony?
Maybe that’s just speculation, but I’ve read it before. They’re related issues though.
“Hey, we want you to make the flagship game for our new CD extension!”
“Oh, we changed our minds, now it’s a cartridge game, you have to get rid of 40% of it [I don’t know where the 40% number comes from or how exact it is, but I’ve seen it repeated in numerous places]”
“Our new system will be a cartridge system, you want in?”
You know that you can play SOM with 3 people at once, right? They didn’t start out planning to make it multi-player, but it had multiple characters and they realized that it would be easy to implement. I guess they wanted to do 4 but couldn’t make it work. I’m not sure if that was a casualty of the move to cartridge or not. I guess having 8 weapons makes more sense if you’re playing with 3 people, and it would actually be the perfect number for 4 players.
Secret of Evermore have 2 characters but no 2 player function was widely regarded as a disappointment.
