I do remember playing an original Playstation. It belonged to my friend’s younger brother. We didn’t play it together much, but I remember playing a wrestling game and Area 51. This was a while after FF7 came out though.
Looking it up online I see that although Playstation hugely outsold N64, N64 did much better in the U.S. than in the rest of the world, so I don’t think the gap was so big here. It outsold Playstation for at least a while. This was in a some random message board thread and sourced to a broken link, but
Nintendo 64 has remained the top-selling system in America for each of the eight months since its introduction (Sept. 29, 1996), according to TRSTS sales data gathered by NPD Research, Port Washington, NY.
From January 1 through April 30, 1997, independent sales data show the world’s first and only 64-bit game machine is selling more than 60 percent ahead of its nearest rival, Sony’s 32-bit PlayStation. Additionally, the industry’s seven top-selling games are available exclusively for Nintendo 64.
I quickly found a bunch of threads about this, with many Americans saying that they perceived N64 as being more popular, and people from other countries saying that they never even saw an N64 and everyone they knew had a Playstation.
Did Playstation have any multiplayer/competitive games as popular as GoldenEye or Smash Brothers?
