I can think of Rancho Notorious and The Furies as films with strong female characters. But I think you’re right in that you’re not going to find anything like The Scarlet Empress in 1950s Hollywood. The “pill popping miserable housewives” stuff from the 1950s probably was the vanguard feminist from the decade, compared to a lot of the mainstream stuff.
