He does plenty of journalistic stuff that’s straightforward and accessible; then he has stuff like the Seven Dreams series which is written in archaic pastiche styles. Either way, his work is a lot more “fun” than someone like, say, Gaddis - Vollmann has lived a colorful life and you get a lot more hard-living anecdotes and wild stories than most pomo writers.
