Your joking reference to the Publius Enigma prize (which should be more historic, considering that it was unveiled on USENET of all places, thus making it an early example of someone using the Internet–in friggin’ 1994!!!–to do viral marketing or a mystery) had me thinking of two things.

One is this, a puzzle started in 1982 with 12 parts, only 2 have been solved and I think the people responsible for setting up the whole thing have been dying off so there’s no clue on whether the other 10 parts will ever be solved!!!

The other is this 1979 “children’s book” with nice drawings of rabbits and such that was tied to a real life treasure hunt. Looking at how the clues are supposed to work, the whole thing seems pretty damn ridiculous, requiring an OCD level of nerdiness to solve.
