he go elected as a pro-civil rights governor of a racist state by holding small campaign gatherings with black community leaders and explaining his actual positions to them so that they could go back and spread the news to their neighborhoods or churches or NAACP chapters or whoever, and they he ran radio adds where he said “I’m against block voting,” but made it kind of sound like “black voting,” so that racist people trying to listen to the radio in the middle of noisy rush-hour traffic would get confused and vote for him. That’s still kind of gross, but it’s also hilarious, so on the balance I think it’s more awesome than not.
