the first story in Puck of Pook’s Hill, it has a character explaining that everyone who arrived in England to raid or conquer or settle brought their gods with them, but “England is a bad place for gods,” and as people’s worship dried up the gods had to find other things to do.
i don’t begrudge him using the idea, Kiplibg didn’t do a ton with it tbh.
