Yeah I watched this and I wasn’t super impressed but it’s not Drummeo’s fault. I kind of like their channel though sometimes I find the main guy a bit annoying. The doc was kind of what I expected, though I was hoping that, after 2 years of promoting this documentary, it might actually have a little more to it…
From not being able to use any of the music, to Phil just kind of being done with his career and not seeming enthusiastic about it anymore, it wasn’t great. “I’m not the biggest fan of Genesis” is the key sentence in the whole thing really. The best things I got from this were his talks with his son, and seeing who else in the business thinks Phil was a great drummer. Otherwise as a fan of the band who knows way too much about them, you don’t really learn anything, the same old sentences Phil and various band members have been saying in interviews for 30 years.
I feel sometimes when band people act like this towards their career, especially their older stuff, it kind of makes you feel like an idiot for caring about it yourself. Why should I listen to this stuff if the creators of it just kind of shrug at it. It’s a bit “Shatner dumps on Star Trek fans”, just, a little more subtle. Sometimes I feel like they pretend to not remember stuff too… Some of the things in the documentary are like “How can he not remember this”, but if you look at not-so-old interviews, sometimes they pull things out of their memory that surprise you. They just seem to choose when to seem like they remember stuff, and when to be dismissive towards their old career. Banks also acts like this sometimes but at least he doesn’t shrug it off, he’ll remember the details and tell you with a very vivid mind that “this was all too busy” or something like that. Phil is just like “eeeh… next question” basically.
Also, Phil’s health is really going down the drain fast. I saw the tour twice in late 2021 and, while he was definitely not doing well then, he definitely seems even worse now. How many meds is he on? His autobiography was a bit sad, describing his late-age alcoholism (which they didn’t get into in this documentary), and how he felt like he had beaten it by 2016, and life was now looking great again, then right after the book came out, his wife sent a SWAT team to his house or something ridiculous to expel him and live in it with her new boyfriend.
