Yeah theres only so much they could do with Phil in the state that he is. I get the impression that he is how he is right now largely because of his physical issues. if he could still play drums I think we’d be seeing an entirely different side of him. It definitely takes something out of you when your calling and passion and is taken from you by your health. I certainly hope he is able to continue his life as comfortably as possible, but I would not be surprised in the slightest if he is the first classic Genesis member to pass away.
I enjoyed his book, yeah it’s got many sad portions but that’s the kind of frankness I’d hope to see in an autobiography. He definitely didnt shy away from how much of a shitty husband he was/is, wouldnt be surprised if he left the book on a positive note because you kind of have to give it a decent ending regardless of how his actual home life was.
Most artists never have the most accurate memories of their history (in the drumeo vid he misremembers Bruford as not having been in King Crimson yet when he played with Genesis for instance) or the best views of their own work (Phil saying “wot gorilla” is a highlight on wind haha. it is a drum-led song though i can see why hed like it). I totally get that, i think it happens with all of us, like if you asked me about what happened in a specific year of my life i’d probably forget most of the specifics, but then some random thing a person says could cause all those details to come rushing back. It’s a totally different thing to be observing an artist as a fan than experiencing it as the actual guy.
I’m pretty happy Drumeo is out there doing these kinds of videos though. Loved the recent one with Mike Portnoy being forced to learn a Nickelback song on the fly (and improving it in the process imo). The stewart copeland episodes were pretty fun too. their main business is promoting the music lessons that they’re selling but i think they really do a good job of inspiring people (or me at least) to bring out the passion for learning the instrument in a really great way while also still being entertaining for someone who doesnt play drums.
