I had a videotape with Disney songs when I was a kid and it was on there. Until I read the article I actually had no idea the song was controversial – I thought it was one of the better-known Disney songs, enough to be divorced from the film and generally accepted to be the only reference to the movie acceptable in mixed company. Hey, they just shut down Splash Mountain like last year. But I guess not.
I know I’ve seen parts of Song of the South (in particular, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” and the B’rer Rabbit/tar baby part) so that makes a little more sense that it was more widely known in the mid ’80s. I know we didn’t have the movie.
