I actually have Song of the South on my computer that I’ve never watched. I might do that sometime.
Have you seen it? I imagine it’s the film equivalent of hearing your grandmother talk about Brazil nuts but some of the animation is gorgeous.
Speaking of things that movie has poisoned, I felt a bit uneasy about buying a book copy of Uncle Remus at a thrift shop. Is there anything particularly racist about it? I’d have to look for it.
My mom doesn’t bat an eye at Plantation brand molasses but given the history of sugar production in this hemisphere… I don’t know, tempora mutantur and all.
There’s no reason to kill Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben. There were racist advertisements back in the day, but try living in Virginia sometime. All rhis year-zero (or actually year-negative as we haven’t gotten to where year zero would be) makes me sad.
Chief Wahoo was deliciously subversive but that was his sole reason for existence after about 1990. It basically ended up as a trolljob getting more embarrassingly dated by the day, so why not kill him? The fucking Guardians, though – there was a historical (19th century) team called the Cleveland Spiders whose badass name was right there for the taking.
