I confess to a bit of secret snobbery

that I was kind of glad to see that Revolver, by virtue of being at #20, will NOT be topping yet another GOAT list. It’s a good album but it’s my least favorite of their classics and I preferred it when Sgt. Pepper’s was the obligatory Beatles #1.

I thought that Alanis Morissette had been kind of swept up by the tides of history and that her big album was mostly going to be remembered by music snobs as being the one that officially marked the point of no return for alternative rock, that it was officially doomed to die from being slick and corporate and commercial and fake. I confess to slightly liking “You Oughta Know” but I haven’t heard that song in public in ages. I used to hear “Ironic” a lot still, but not much anymore.

She also deserves a strike for epitomizing bad 90s album cover art. How many times did we have to see those whispy color schemes, spray-painted typewriter fonts and pics of the artist looking pensive?

The last 10 albums are missing.
