Oh okay, yeah, I recognize “Gone Shooting.” From the movie and the theme song which comments are saying it’s the “Gone Shooting” bassline backwards? I figured it could have been similar to a lot of songs really.
“Have You Ever Loved A Woman” is alright but I can think of songs that can do that arpeggio thing better.
My mom liked some of the more hated Clapton albums, like Pilgrim and Behind The Sun. I’m not going to be listening to those again, I know that much! I did know his drug abuse was supposed to be really awful, but I also knew that the love-conquers-all story concerning Patti Boyd leaving Harrison for Clapton turned very sour after they were married and he was abusive to her and cheated on her and had kids outside of marriage with other women while he was married to her and I guess still on drugs much of the time? (I’ve read lots of articles about the whole saga and most of them brush over how Clapton ended up treating her.) I can remember being NINE YEARS OLD when “Tears In Heaven” came out and heard older kids saying that Clapton’s son fell out the window because he got high or drunk or something and left the window open. This was BACK THEN. I guess shit like that kind of colored my impression of him–that and I didn’t like a lot of his music because my mom played the Phil Collins stuff. In retrospect I can think of worse “boomers try 80s synthesizers” music than Clapton’s, though. I dunno, is 461 Ocean Boulevard a good album? That was a best seller right? Then he had “Cocaine” and the onstage remark about getting rid of all the Jamaicans in Britain?
Whatever–I still think it’s stunning to think that he’d been through all those bands and done all that stuff and was still only 24 years old on the photo of his self titled album. We’ll give him that.
I did read the Rita Coolidge/Jim Gordon story in various reviews (like I would really believe a drummer would write such a great piano part) and did know about Gordon killing his mother and going to prison and the other guy in the band dying of drugs and Bobby Whitlock not going on to much of a career and Duane Allman dead shortly after the album came out and I guess the whole thing is just even more tragic than Allman Brothers and Skynyrd both, huh?
I might try the D&theD live album, I did see George gave it the 13. But George also liked a lot of stuff on the album that I didn’t and vice versa.
