This is what the VHS tape I watched looked like, it’s apparently from 1989, which puts it after this “1988 version” you’re talking about.

Previously my pick for the most annoying “too many versions of a movie” scenario was Close Encounters Of The Third Kind which obnoxiously added something for its first special edition and then had to retract it for its second one because Spielberg didn’t actually want to do it. But that really pales in comparison to PG&BTK, because so much of it is based on stuff people tried to piece together after the auteur croaked.

From the basis of what you’re telling me, though, it looks like Criterion did the right thing.

Didn’t they have to include like five versions of Brazil for the Criterion of that, including the stupid version ruined by the Saul Zaentz-like studio head guy? Is the most thorough they’ve ever had to be Orson Welles’ Mr. Arkadin?
