There was a debate at this board over whether or not the "Boyhood" thing really was a gimmick

But the movie got a 100 (ONE HUNDRED!) on Metacritic, so…I mean, I’m not remembering what you’re remembering. I suppose, I mean, I guess the acclaim has diminished since time, but I bet people are still talking about it more than fuckin’ Birdman, which didn’t really stick in the public consciousness very well and which got the Best Picture win instead.

I think that Norville has a very valid point, so I don’t dismiss the gimmick, but I only ever thought Boyhood was a good film, not a masterful film, for one simple reason: a significant percentage of what’s on screen is adolescent/wanderlust stuff that Linklater has kind of already covered in his other films (I mean, that twerpy scene with the main kid getting threatened in the bathroom isn’t going to stand a chance against Adam Goldberg getting pounded in Dazed And Confused , is it?)

Of all the mass shooters/killers to emerge since 1999, Elliot Rodger is far and away the one that elicits the most “cringe.” He probably deserves it, too–I read that his father had to go get him escorts so he’d come out of his shell. It’s been said that the Columbine killers would have bullied HIM. Adam Lanza is the creepiest–like a checklist of everything an even remotely conservative father would NOT want his kid to be (autistic, bullying victim, scrawny wimp, medicated, video game addict, social media freak, no girlfriend, recluse). I have now seen not one but TWO documentaries about the Sandy Hook thing that refused to mention him by name.
