It’s only a “gimmick” in that it would be impossible to do without a very unusual production, and the unusual production lent it a special interest. But it’s not a project done just for the sake of doing a weird project. The only other way to make that movie would be to animate it. Is it a gimmick to do it in live action? Hollywood rarely does serious animated movies, although I guess Linklater has done 2.
