Oh fuck, I forgot about Walker. I saw that two or three years ago. I didn’t love it but zero seemed a bit harsh. At least I wasn’t really familiar with the story of William Walker before seeing the movie, and having read up on him, I think someone could make a similar movie but a better one.
I’d never heard of Nightfall so I looked it up. Asimov…guy who wrote Man Who Fell To Earth…New Horizons? Didn’t they put out shit like Deathstalker? No wait, that was New World/New Concorde. 8 IMDb external reviews? Last time I watched a movie was less external reviews than that was Decoder.
The IMDb bottom 100 just shifts the same movies around over and over and over, so I sort of stopped paying attention to it. The top 250 isn’t much better. As with movie budgets, movie grosses and when big budget movies flop, this is something that’s been getting less interesting to me as life goes on and on and on. I wonder if the list is actually getting people to watch stuff like Son of The Mask or The Hottie And The Nottie?
I can think of a couple of bits in Gummo that made me laugh, but little about the movie that gave the impression that Harmony Korine had much in the way of actual skill, regardless of his background. Honestly, how hard could it be to hang around a bunch of rednecks in a dessicated Midwestern shit hole town for awhile. Oh wow, he had a piece of bacon nailed to a wall in one scene, what crazy art.
I don’t know what Korine is doing nowadays, he got some press for Spring Breakers, which managed a couple of funny scenes with James Franco, the world’s most inconsistent actor. But that was awhile ago. (Come to think of it, I don’t know what Franco is doing nowadays, since his weird streak of half-assed indie-art movies and bizarre publicity stunts like writing a novel, appearing on a soap opera and attending university classes where he falls asleep seems to have come to an end, probably due to the MeToo accusations against him.)
You don’t need to watch Ishtar. It’s just really boring generic 80s HBO-movie type comedy and then a bunch of dumb shootouts with helicopters and some shit. A boring waste of money.
What I find funny is how Dustin Hoffman won that Oscar for Rain Man when literally everything else he was doing around that time flopped horribly (Billy Bathgate, Hook, Hero, Ishtar, etc.)
