It’s possible that it’s only the opening of “Red House” that evokes that imagery for me…but that is one old-timey intro.
If we were digging out the “quintessential album” tag that George used to use, I’d hand it to Ladyland easily. But that’s without being very familiar with his live stuff.
Just regarding your comment about When A Stranger Calls being in the Criterion collection…well, just so you know, Gummo is in there–FUCKING GUMMO, YOU UNDERSTAND–so I’m kinda thinking they’ll take anything.
Oh, and they’re putting in The Doom Generation for a Criterion release too (part of Gregg Araki’s “Teen Apocalypse Trilogy”). To my knowledge, TDG is the only Ebert “zero-star” review to make it into the Collection.
