I wonder if Geddy will try for a new project one of these days. You know Rush fans are waiting for something from him and Alex. A Lifeson/Lee album would be welcomed by just about everyone I think. But even a solo Geddy album would be nice to see. Lifeson has done some collabs with other artists but nothing that’s actually worth checking out.
This board predates Swift’s popularity so it’s not that strange that some folks here wouldnt have heard her before, but the more time passes the more unavoidable she becomes.
“SMPT:e” and “Bridge Across Forever” are both pretty good prog albums, among the best of the 00s (not that that’s a high bar). Better than any individual Dream Theater or Flower Kings album. Neal Morse is genuinely a pretty talented guy and is more a victim of being overly prolific than anything else. (how many 20 minute epics can one man create? clearly Neal has yet to reach his limit). Spock’s Beard’s album “V” is maybe his best record but the Transatlantic albums come pretty close, and they definitely have more instrumental chops than SB did.
“All Of The Above” is as good a signature tune as they could hope for. 30 minutes is crazy for the length of a single song but it holds together well and has enough ideas for it’s duration. I like their version of “In Held (‘Twas) in I” better than the procol harum’s original.
Bridge has reprises that cross between the three epics of the album which is a fun little gimmick that makes the record feel more cohesive. All of the larger pieces are worthwhile in their own right though. And I like how much sharing of the vocals the members have.
The Whirlwind album is good but even though it’s presented as one giant epic, in practice it feels more like a concept album with a bunch of separate songs that segue together which actually makes it feel less epic than their previous work imo. They do a 30 minute condensed version on one of their live albums which I think actually is better than the original since it feels less like a bunch of separate songs that way.
Kaleidoscope is their weakest record but has some good sections among the longer pieces. and The Absolute Universe has another pretty neat gimmick with alternate mixes that are 30 minutes different in length. the shorter version is actually the better version imo. But still they were past their prime by this point, the first two records are all you need really.
