He also does the Style Council and his solo albums up to that point (1997), but you don’t care about those, and neither do I.

In The City (1977) ‘“In The City’ is a fuckin’ teenage classic. ‘Non-Stop Dancing’ is good, I can still relate to the words on that. There’s some bollocks like ‘Time For Truth’. Three stars for the spunk alone.”
Highest Chart Position: 20
Paul Weller Rating: ***

This Is The Modern World (1977) “Half of it was rubbish. There’s a lot of die-hard Jam fans who like that record. It’s kind of elitist, because everyone hated it when it came out. It was a bit uninspired. ‘Life From A Window’ was good.”
Highest Chart Position: 22
Paul Weller Rating:*

All Mod Cons (1978) “I’d found my feet. After This Is The Modern World, I thought, ‘Am I going to let this slide or fight against it?’ My back was against the wall. It was a matter of self-pride.”
Highest Chart Position: 6
Paul Weller Rating: 5 stars

Setting Sons (1979) “I was trying to be conversational, putting in everyday images. There were some good songs on there. ‘Private Hell’ is wicked. I wasn’t happy with the sound, though -over-dubbed, tracked-up guitars.”
Highest Chart Position: 4
Paul Weller Rating:****

Sound Affects (1980) “I prefer this stripped-down sound. ‘Monday’ was good. I like that whole idea of suburban romanticism: not dreaming of Friday or Saturday night, but Monday and Wednesday as well. Monday and Wednesday are suburban days for me.”
Highest Chart Position: 2
Paul Weller Rating: 5 stars

The Gift (1982) “I’d got into soul again. ‘Town Called Malice’ went beyond pastiche - I really liked the energy. It’s a fuckin’ good album. But the band was winding down. I’d had enough.”
Highest Chart Position: 1
Paul Weller Rating:****
