Here’s a brief look at every licensed SNES game that came out after (maybe only in North America?) the N64 was released. The last one will shock you:

As already discussed, I got DK3 and Street Fighter Alpha 2 when they were still being sold new.

I may have played that Mortal Combat 3, I’m not sure. I’ve played one of the two SNES versions.

I love the original SNES Prince of Persia, which is supposed to be the best version of that game, with the most levels and best graphics. I wanted the sequel until I read reviews and played it for a few minutes on emulator.

I definitely didn’t know that they released a bunch of ports of old arcade games.

If it was warmly received, then that’s better than all the attempts to revive the movie franchise.

I think it was somewhat easier to understand exactly what would please the fans when it comes to video games.
