I’ll probably rewatch it this year and see if there are cracks I overlooked taking it in the first time, but I thought that it held together than that the twists and revelations were properly foreshadowed. I watched a bunch of horror movies for the first time last Halloween season and that was my favorite.
I will say that The Devil’s Backbone did not hold up all that well on my second viewing, but I like it more than you do.
The only really good part of Manhunter is the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. The song is certainly used more effectively there than in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.
I am also skeptical of the 2005 House of Wax being better known than the 1953 version. It’s not a real remake either, is it? FWIW, the 1953 movie is a remake of the 1933 two-tone Technicolor movie Mystery at the Wax Museum, directed by Michael Curtiz (director of The Sea Hawk).
I’m not ignoring your X-Files post. I’ll respond to it later, although I still haven’t revisited the show.
