Like, lots of the big blockbuster films now are supposed to be seen in sequential order, tv shows are less likely to be standalone episodes, etc. I think there’s much more of an expectation that audiences are familiar with previous installments - something like Avengers Endgame is incomprehensible if you haven’t seen a bunch of other related movies.
