I meant open-ended in the story sense, like they’re just making it up as they go along. Sort of like my points across this thread… :-)
but yeah, sounds like most of Dickens was not actually done that way. As for Hitchhiker’s Guide, I think I had read somewhere that the reason the series went all over the place story-wise is because Adam’s didn’t really have a plan and was just making things up as he was going along, but I think that was more about his approach to writing the novels rather than the radio series.
And yes, I think I was conflating “serial” with “open-ended”. Your implication is correct that they are actually two separate concepts that sometimes overlap
