It’s possible that Pearl could’ve come out in 1969, though it might have been a bit jarring after the garagey psych-rock of Cheap Thrills…and I’m now reminded that Janis put out an album in 1969, but I’ve not heard it. I’m hearing some rather expensive orchestration and slick production on Pearl too that I’m not entirely sure I would have heard in 1969, more appropriate for 1971. Of course the Who and Led Zeppelin and the Stones were all doing stadium rock that year. I guess it’s just a tribute to how far music came between 1964 and 1971 that you can split it by year like this.
But yes, I did actually, without mentioning it, mean that it seems like a hippie album because Janis died before she could transition away from that.
I do NOT see L. A. Woman as any choice for the “last hippie album.” Probably due to all the blues.
