This song rules. It’s not everyday I’m genuinely surprised by a songwriting trick I’ve never heard before. She puts a key change in the 2nd verse which gives the song a feel of continual rising momentum and causes the 2nd chorus to feel like another leap upwards even though it’s actually a return to the original key, which is an awesome musical illusion (and matches the pleading lyrical themes too). Songwritng nerd in me loves this kinda thing. The tune is great too, and she sings “motherfucker” in a funny way.

I’ve been listening to her album a lot this week and it’s pretty great. The persona she’s playing up on this record is a pretty entertaining mix of sexy and self-deprecating with some genuinely funny lyrics. I’m sure you’ve all heard Espresso in the background of a wal-mart by this point. not sure if it’s at risk of overplay yet or not, but it hasn’t been overplayed for me yet and damn thats an earworm. I like that it’s unashamed to be a full on Yacht Rock tune. it holds up well to closer listens, very detailed production fun lyric wordplay. Great hit single if you ask me. Wouldn’t be surprised if “Bad Chem” “Good Graces” or “Juno” become hits too, all great pop-bop type tunes. but the album has some great acoustic numbers too.

This song reminds me of Dolly Parton.?si=EQxhSEy-dRM2EgbF
