What’s spinning?

I am at the optometrist right now getting my eyes dilated so I cannot see what I am typing. However, while I wait to be seen by the doctor, I’d like to share the latest albums I’ve been listening to. Please forgive any spelling mistakes. I literally cannot see what I an typing.

What’s spinning

  • Guero - Beck - good rec @billdude. The title track feels like Loser 2 (not a bad thing)
  • Saxophone Collossus - Sonny Rollins
  • I Am The Cosmos - Chris Bell - this was an album recorded the lead singer (I think? I cannot look it up rn bc of my eyes) of Big Star. It was posthumously release and apparently sold pretty well. The title track is really great and worth listening to. It’s somehow nostalgic even though i’ve never heard it before
  • Sel_ected Ambient Works 85-92_ - Aphex Twin - great music to work to. I’m pretty sure that’s what Aphex Twin was going for right?
  • Durazno Sangrando - Invisible - i found this artist because i’m learning spanish and realized that most music I like has some kind of spanish-language equivalent, so it’s fun if you feel like you’ve hit the limits on a genre to look at alternate takes on the genre from other countries. This band has an Argentian (I think) take on prog-rock and it’s often very good. More jazzy than typical prog. I don’t really remember this album though. I’d start with El Jardin De Los Presentes. which has some really fantastic songs
  • Hosono House - Haroumi Hosono - this is a lovely soft guitar-driven rock album that apparently really influenced Mac Demarco and other folks in that genre. Definitely worth a listen

What’s watching

  • Seven Samurai - just watched this last night. I’ve heard this was really influential to Star Wars, and I can certainly see elements of that. It was a fun watch and definitely more accessible than I had imagined- lots of funny parts, some very cartoony jokes. It was definitely long but I think it’s more watchable than some similarly long movies I’ve seen recently eg Oppenheimer
  • Fallen Leaves - this was a pretty short and comic slice-of-life romance from a famous Finnish director
  • The Curse - i’m really curious if any Babblers watched this. Definitely one of the most difficult to watch TV shows I’ve ever seen. I thought it had a really great critique of well-meaning liberals trying to justify their participation in gentrification, so I was surprised to see that the show apparently got critically panned more or less. I think part of that has got to be that critics were turned off by just how uncomfortable the show is. It also seems like the ending had people split. I liked it but I can understand wishing that the show wrapped up more of the storylines

What media are y’all consuming lately?
