I’m kind of in the same boat regarding sports. I was huge into football and then hockey and finally baseball, but with largely afternoon-into-evening shifts I couldn’t watch much sports live (sine qua non) and it seemed that I had better things to do with three precious hours than listen to a ballgame.

The big thing was the Capitals winning the Stanley Cup in 2018 after a decade of playoff-choking and then the Nationals winning the World Series in 2019. Where do you go from there? Cheer for a repeat? I thought it was about time that I ended real sports fandom, but I do still follow sports.

Alex Ovechkin’s retirement will probably mark the end of serious hockey-watching for me; he’s about a month older than me so of course I’ve grown up alongside him.

I’ve been little by little enjoying basketball, not because I like the sport so much as it’s unexplored territory for me. It’s either that, soccer, or NASCAR.

Where’s Sam when you need him?
