I would be remiss in omitting that the name-changers were 100% wrong (in that the team would be exactly the same, just not onomastically, and the people defending the Redskins’ name were right. I wish it weren’t the case, but the Commanders, as I think it was John Riggins who said it, are a team with no history and no fans, just a husk of franchise rot from decades of mismanagement.

This used to be a football town where everybody at least followed the Redskins and bonded communally that way. The Redskins were the glue that held the city together; the name change just kind of confirmed that nobody really gives a shit about football in the DMV anymore. DC is now mostly a basketball town with hockey and/or baseball very, very hot when the teams are hot.

Anyway, regardless of what you think of the name change, it’s effectively killed professional football in the District. Even if the Commanders have a championship run in them, the Commanders aren’t the old Redskins galvanizing the community.

This is basically a school-assignment three-paragraph essay, lol.
